What Are Pudding Shots?
Pudding shooters are one of those things that both make and break a party. They make a party because they are fun to eat and are usually quite delicious. They are small but packed with booze, so they’re not only cute and portable but also delicious. The base is thick and rich chocolate pudding with a hint of coffee and a splash of Kahlua liqueur.
Kahlua is one of my favorites! This frozen mudslide, this mocha mudslide hot chocolate, and these pudding pops are all made better with Kahlua. And in my experience, no Tiramisu would be complete without a little Kahlua.

How To Make Tiramisu Pudding Shots
- Beat together the instant chocolate pudding mix with the milk, brewed coffee, and Kahlua liqueur until combined.
- Slowly fold in the whipped topping and then set aside.
- In another bowl combine the white chocolate pudding mix, milk, and vodka with an electric mixer until smooth. fold in the whipped topping.
- Place both puddings mixes into their own zip-top bags and snip a corner from both bags.
- Carefully pipe the chocolate pudding into 12 shot glasses. fill them about halfway full.
- Now pipe the white chocolate pudding into the glasses, filling them to the top.
- Garnish with shaved chocolate pieces, and Pirouette Cookie halves.
- Place the shooters in the fridge to chill for at least one hour, but up to a day.
Recipe Tips
- These shots come together so quickly. Mix the pudding mixes with milk, softened whipped topping, and alcohol. I chose Kahlua and vodka because they felt most similar to Tiramisu dessert to me. But you can adjust the alcohol and the amounts added according to your tastes.
- The simplest, neatest way to fill the shot glasses was by placing both white chocolate and milk chocolate pudding in zip-top bags, snipping the ends, and piping the pudding right in.
- Fold in the whipped cream, do not stir, or else your pudding will deflate.
- Instant Pudding is the best for pudding shots as it sets up quickly. Make sure to ONLY use the dry powdered stuff, do not prepare the pudding mix at all before using!
- Use very cold milk when making pudding shots and beat on high with a handheld mixer. The cold milk and all the air from whisking will work to set your pudding.
- As far as what size cups to use for pudding shots, I used 1.02-ounce glasses I found on Amazon along with small plastic spoons. But you can use disposable plastic cups or any other cup you like!
Variations
- Any type of alcohol will work in pudding shots, you can substitute brandy, vodka, flavored Irish cream, or whiskeys, tequilas, and bourbons in your shots.
- Flavored vodka would be delicious!
FAQs
Why Didn’t My Pudding Shots Set?
- One very important thing to mention about making pudding shots is your milk and your whipped topping MUST BE COLD! Otherwise, your instant pudding will not be set up to be thick enough.
- You will have to beat your pudding and cold milk on high speed to get enough air into your pudding to have set properly. Refrigerate your pudding until you are ready to serve them up!
- I promise your party will be more memorable with these Tiramisu pudding shots! They are fun, festive, and irresistible!
How Long Do Pudding Shots Last?
Pudding shots should keep in your refrigerator for 5-7 days and can be kept in the freezer for up to a month. Allow them to thaw in the fridge before serving.
Can Pudding Shots Be Made With Almond Milk?
Almond milk does not have the fat that cow’s milk has, so your pudding will not be set up properly. This will hold true for any milk alternative.
You can use a thickener with almond milk if you are working with old-fashioned pudding that needs to be cooked.

These look delicious!! By whipped topping, do you mean the frozen kind, like cool whip, or just redi-whip? I am assuming cool whip but don’t have enough time to make a test batch and don’t want to mess up. Thanks!

Actually it is NOT a BHG recipe, it’s my own. Perhaps one exists, but I did not know about it. But good to know!

How far in advance can you make these? They look amazing!
Tanya Schroeder says
You could make them up to a day in advance.
Joe says
Question here:. We just tried to make this, and ended up with soup. Do you make the pudding itself with the combined ingredients, or do you just use the mix without making the pudding?
Evelyn says
Sorry, the instructions seem so simple and yet like Joe, my pudding ended up as soup. Can you tell me what I did wrong? Do I make the pudding first or is it that I did not let the whopped toping come to room temperature?
Thanks.
Lemonsforlulu says
Evelyn, I’m so sorry, I retested the recipe after Joe had issues, and I did not have runny pudding. Here are my suggestions, make sure you are using instant pudding and cold, whole milk. You could use less milk if you like, to ensure it thickens. Make you sure you allow it to set for 5 minutes. I would make sure your whipped topping is at room temperature, it will easier to incorporate. Also, make sure you use electric beaters and allow them to beat the pudding until it begins to thicken. I have heard of some people using a blender, I have not tried this method. Lastly, allow it to refrigerate, this should help set the pudding. I sincerely hope this helps!
Jeanette says
What is whipped topping ….is this whipped cream
Lemonsforlulu says
Frozen whipped topping, like Cool Whip
isabel dela cruz says
What vodka brand do you prefer? Thanks
Lemonsforlulu says
To drink Grey Goose, but I used Pinnacle in this recipe.
Ramona says
Does it matter what kind of coffee you use, and have you ever doubled this recipe? I’m going to be making these for a party.
Tanya Schroeder says
No it does not matter, whatever you have at home. I have not tried doubling the recipe, but I don’t think it would be a problem.
Erica Lawrence says
Silly question but do you use ground coffee or liquid brewed coffee? Thanks!
Tanya Schroeder says
You will use brewed coffee and not a silly question at all!
Nick Miles says
What is boxed xhocolate pudding? Is it like a sponge mix?
Tanya Schroeder says
It is more like custard.
Stephanie Z says
Mine turned out totally soupy as well. I didn’t use instant pudding, but the recipe doesn’t specify that so I didn’t buy that. The instructions don’t say to let it set for 5 minutes, but I read the recommendation for that in the comments. Oh well. I may try again another time, but I had to totally change my plans since I was bringing dessert for a dinner party.
Tanya Schroeder says
I’m sorry to hear that this did not turn out for you. I do find that the brands of pudding vary and some you have to beat for a long time. Be sure your milk is very cold and it would help to chill the bowl as well.
Lianna says
Thinking of making this for small party. Can i not use whipped topping? Not a fan of whipped cream.
Tanya Schroeder says
You can, although the whipped topping adds “bulk” and a lightness to the pudding. You could also make a homemade whipped cream.
Teri says
It is unfortunate that the original recipe did not specify instant pudding. Big difference. Also, when speaking of a whipped topping, I can only assume you are referring to a Cool Whip type product. I so want to make these but I am looking for clarification so mine does not come out wrong. Thanks in advance.
Tanya Schroeder says
Yes, you will use instant pudding. Make sure your milk is very cold and that you follow the directions on the box so your pudding sets. And yes, whipped topping can either be the store brand or Cool Whip brand.
cupcakes says
do i whip the whip topping first so it thickens to whip cream or leave it liquid??
Tanya Schroeder says
I used a frozen whipped topping like Cool Whip. If you were going to make your own whipped topping then whip the cream until fluffy and refrigerate it while your prepare the pudding.
cupcakes says
also one more thing, can i make this a non-dairy dessert? Like can i use soy milk?
Tanya Schroeder says
I have not tried using soy milk for pudding, but I am not sure soy milk would fluff up the pudding quite like cow’s milk.
Tina says
I’m trying this and I have soup. I used instant, beat for 10 minutes, usedcold milk. Still soup. Even for instant you have to cook the pudding mix for it to set. You sure you didn’t make pudding according to box then add all the other stuff?
Tanya Schroeder says
I’m sorry you are having trouble. I have never had an instant pudding that needed to be cooked. I have always been able to whip it with milk.
Michelle says
Worked great
Tanya Schroeder says
Yay!
Caroline says
These sound yummy and fun, but are you sure its a 13.5 oz box of instant chocolate/white chocolate pudding? I live in Canada and have a small 113 gram box which is equivalent to about 4 ozs. The instructions call for 2 cups of cold milk. I would think to reduce the amount of milk by the volume of kahlua and coffee added.
Tanya Schroeder says
It is (1) 3.5 oz box, sorry!
Sarah Andersen says
My shot glasses are 2.5 ounces. They seem really small! Is this the co
Tanya Schroeder says
I think you may need a larger size or cut the recipe in half. If all else fails, you can use wine glasses.
