What’s Pigs In A Blanket?
Pigs in a blanket are some sort of sausage or a hot dog wrapped in breading. There a million and one ways to eat pigs in a blanket; some are small and are appetizers and some can be consumed for breakfast. Pigs in a blanket are fun, versatile and multifunctional!
Where Did Pigs In A Blanket Originate?
Pigs in a blanket may actually date back to the 1700’s in England. It is said that laborers would wrap meat in bread for an easy way to contain and transport their lunches. The first written account of the recipe, however, can be found in a 1957 edition of the Betty Crocker Cooking for Kids Cookbook. Pigs in a blanket are definitely not new but there are quite a few modern spins on this classic.
How Are Pigs In A Blanket Made?
One of the most common ways to make pigs in a blanket is with crescent rolls and hot dogs. Mini Vienna sausages are also quite a popular party food. But I have seen so many different ways to serve these up. I’ve seen breakfast sausage links tucked inside pancakes, smoked sausage in crescent rolls, chorizo in tortillas, sausage in bread dough…if you can imagine it, it has probably already been done! This recipe takes cooked Italian sausage and surrounds them with sandwich size pepperoni and provolone cheese. Soft pizza dough is cut into strips and wraps around each sausage. I brushed each “pig” with melted butter and sprinkled them with garlic salt. They will take about 20-25 minutes to bake up all golden and fluffy. Serve these pigs with a side of pizza sauce.
