Trifles are as fun to say as they are to eat. I find when trifles are around, people say that name over and over again. “Can I get you some trifle?” “Do you want to try some trifle?” Did you like the “trifle” Trifle! Trifle! Trifle!
But what else can you say? Can I get you some layered dessert? Would you like some chocolate and some pudding? Nothing else is descriptive enough or even accurate. A trifle is a trifle and no other name will do.
What Is A Trifle Dessert?
A trifle is English in origin. It is a layered dessert, made with fruit, a sponge cake (usually soaked in liqueur or wine), and custard.
The ingredients are assembled in a clear trifle bowl or trifle dish so that each layer can be displayed.
We have changed the English trifle in this part of the world, to include almost any ingredient we like, especially chocolate!
How To Make Irish Cream Trifle Recipe
To start this chocolate trifle recipe, you need to prepare your cake!
Prepare a box of deviled food cake mix according to package directions. Once the cake comes out of the oven, poke holes using the handle of a wooden spoon or a dowel, about an inch apart. Pour Irish Cream liqueur into the holes and allow the cake to sit in the fridge for about an hour.
While the cake cools, prepare chocolate pudding, adding Irish Cream to the chocolate pudding.
Grab a large glass bowl or a trifle dish if you have one and begin the layering process.
Cut your cake into cubes and place a ⅓ of the cake into the bottom of the dish. Spoon ⅓ of the pudding, ⅓ of a container of whipped cream and chopped Andes Mints. Repeat the layers ending with the whipped cream and the chocolate.
Allow the assembled trifle to sit in the fridge until you are ready to serve.
How Long Will This Irish Cream Trifle Recipe Last?
A trifle really is best when consumed the day it is made. However, if loosely covered with plastic wrap and stored in the fridge, a trifle can last for up to 3 days.
Keep in mind, because the cake is soaked in alcohol, it will get a little soggy and moist.
Can A Trifle Recipe Be Made Ahead?
Yes, you can make this dessert ahead of time, but I would take precautions.
As mentioned above, the cake will get soggy if it sits too long. Therefore, if you need to make this cake in advance, I would prepare the cake as directed and store it covered in the fridge.
The day that you need the dessert, prepare the pudding while you allow the cake to come to room temperature.
Layer the dessert as directed and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Can A Trifle Recipe Be Frozen?
I would avoid freezing this dessert. Because the cake is moistened, it will not handle the thawing process very well.
How To Serve A Trifle Recipe?
I’m going to be honest with you on this one, if you want a dessert that presents well when served, then skip this trifle recipe!
The best way to serve this dessert is with a long spoon! Dig in, making sure you include all the layers and place the trifle in a bowl. Top with additional whipped cream and chopped candies if desired!
Trifle Tips and Substitutions
While the Devils Food cake tastes really good with the chocolate pudding and the Irish Cream, you can easily use a yellow cake or a pound cake if you prefer, and combine it with vanilla custard, although the flavor will be quite different.
If you were going to use a pound or yellow cake, Irish Whiskey or even Irish Cream coffee creamer can be used in place of the chocolate cake.
If you want to try a different trifle altogether, try this Carrot Cake Trifle or this Coconut Key Lime Trifle.

I assume you used a 9×13 pan for the cake, but how about the pudding, instant ?
Tanya Schroeder says
Yes to both!
Dominique hearnes says
Do I use 2 cups of milk instead of 4 (2 per box) to make the instant?
