I always thought hot buttered rum sounded terrible. I mean who drinks butter? Surely butter in warm alcohol would taste awful, right? Um no. In fact, it tastes amazing! Shame on me for doubting this glorious concoction and not trying it sooner!
What Is Hot Buttered Rum?
Hot buttered rum is a cocktail or a mixed drink made with rum, butter, hot water, cider, or apple juice along with sugar and sometimes spices.
It is especially popular in the fall and winter and is traditionally associated with the holiday season. This drink supposedly dates back to colonial days.

This recipe is quite simple to make!

STEP TWO – Place the apple cider or apple juice in a saucepan and bring to a boil, Remove from heat, cool slightly then pour into a pitcher. Stir in the spiced rum.

Hot Buttered Rum Recipe Notes
Some recipes call for ice cream or heavy cream to combined with the butter and sugar mixture. This will definitely make your cocktail a lot creamier than I have here. However, I did not miss the diary!
Store your buttered rum batter in the fridge until needed. The batter can be frozen. Partition out the butter into ice cube trays so that you have servings ready to go when you need them!
Apple cider isn’t available all year long, boiling apple juice or just boil water will be fine in this recipe.
I chose to use spiced rum instead of using additional spices. Feel free to add cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves as desired.
I chose to add my rum directly to my pitcher. If you prefer to monitor the amount of alcohol, then add butter and rum to each glass, then top with the warm cider.
Can I Make Hot Buttered Rum With Whiskey Instead?
The answer is yes! The hot buttered rum batter works well with whiskey (Fireball might taste amazing), scotch, and bourbon as well!
You can easily omit the alcohol too!
I am not going to lie, I still am a little weirded out by drinking butter, but it only tanks me one sip to move past any sort of mental objection! This cozy cocktail is just so good! It is comfort in a mug! This cocktail is perfect all winter long!

Colleen says
Is it better to use salted or unsalted butter in this recipe?
Tanya Schroeder says
Colleen that is an excellent question. I say either. I only use unsalted butter at home, so I have not tested this recipe using salted butter. The salt in your butter is minimal but still noticeable. It would taste similar to salted caramel. I say this is going to be a matter of preference.
