Everyone loves a good bowl of guacamole and this is my favorite easy guacamole recipe! You only need a handful of ingredients to turn avocados into the best guacamole! Your chips will thank you!
Everyone has a signature dish, don’t they? Maybe for you its a cake, brownies, pulled pork, a casserole or deviled eggs.
I have three signature dishes. I always serve these when friends and family come over and I like to bring them to any get together too!
If an event involves food, you can be sure I will be bringing either this Mediterranean 7 Layer Dip, or these Parmesan Ranch Dip with Tortellini, and these Ranch Soft Pretzel Bites,
But no matter, what, I always make a bowl of easy guacamole recipe! This guacamole is simple and so good, each of my kids can quickly whip a batch as well! I can’t believe I haven’t shared this recipe with you before. It is such a staple in my house!
How To Make This Easy Guacamole Recipe
Place your ripe avocados in a mixing bowl. Gently mash until you have the desired consistency. Stir in, cumin, lime juice, cilantro, and salt. AND THAT IS IT!!
But let’s break it down a little more, shall we?
Avocados – When you pick out your avocados, it’s tempting to lean towards the vibrant green ones, but often those are too firm. You cannot judge an avocado by the exterior color. But you have to touch it instead. If the avocado is firm to the touch, then you will have to give it time to ripen (leave your avocados in the counter to ripen, once ripe, place them in the fridge to extend their life). If the avocado yields to gentle pressure then it’s good to go!
Halve your avocado, remove the pit, and place the avocado in a bowl.
Limes – Fresh lime juice are best, but bottled lime juice will work! In a pinch lemon juice can be substituted.
Cumin and Salt – You can adjust these seasonings to taste!
Cilantro – Fresh cilantro adds so much flavor to this guacamole. You could use cilantro paste (found in the produce section of your grocery store). Finely chop your cilantro and stir it right into your guacamole.
But you don’t have to stop with these ingredients! You can also stir in:
- Jalapenos,
- Poblanos peppers
- Onions (red or yellow)
- Tomatoes,
- Green chilies
Tips For Making The Best Guacamole:
When it comes to consistency, your personal preference should guide you. Some people like their guacamole super chunky and some people like it smooth and almost creamy. I like somewhere in the middle.
- To mash your avocados, you can use a potato masher, two forks, or your food processor. However, the best way I have found to mash avocados is by using a pastry blender. It is smaller than a potato masher and has blades that easily work through the avocado.
- The lime juice (or lemon juice) not only adds flavor but it will keep your guacamole from turning brown.
- I personally don’t like to go crazy with the add-ins, I think it detracts from the authentic guacamole flavor.
- Salt as you go. You can’t take salt out once its added, so stir it in carefully!
- Try to use fresh ingredients whenever possible. The flavor is so much better!
Can You Freeze Guacamole?
As a matter of fact, you can! To freeze guacamole, prepare the recipe as directed. Place the guacamole in a ziptop bag, making sure you remove all the air bubbles from the bag. Place the bag in the freezer.
Guacamole will last in the freezer for about 3 months. Thaw the guacamole in the fridge overnight.
Can You Eat Guacamole When It Turns Brown?
Visually, brown guacamole is not as appealing as its vibrant green counterpart. Avocados turn brown because of oxidation or exposure to the air. It is still ok to eat brown avocados, although, by that point, some of the flavors will have been lost.
*Reader Tip* I had a reader comment that suggested you leave the pit in with the guacamole when you store it to keep it from turning brown. I cannot wait to try that!
Can Guacamole Be Made Ahead of Time?
Yes! To prepare guacamole in advance, prepare the recipe as directed. Cover the guacamole with plastic wrap, making sure to press the plastic wrap directly and completely against the surface of the guacamole. When stored this way, guacamole can be made ahead and stored in the fridge up to overnight. If any brown spots develop, a gently stir should take care of it.
This is also the best way to store any leftover guacamole.
What Does Guacamole Go With?
The short answer is anything you like! Of course, guacamole goes with tortilla chips and salsa, nachos, and tacos, but it is also a great veggie dip!
