These crispy fish tacos make a fabulous weeknight meal! Hearty catfish is coated with bread crumbs then fried up until crisp and golden! Fish tacos with slaw are fun to eat and taste as good; even better than any restaurant fish taco!
I’ve been in a food rut lately. I find that anymore, I just want to order pizza for dinner because I don’t have the desire to cook. If I do have the desire, I usually don’t like what I had planned. I can’t win with myself.
I think the family is sick of my cooking. I’ve been getting a lot of “soup again?” or “didn’t we just have pasta” and “wow, we eat a lot of chicken”. I can’t win with the family either.
A few weeks ago I fried up some catfish for the family and everyone loved it! I was tickled by the fact that we had leftovers because I knew exactly what to do with them…make fish tacos!
What Type Of Fish Should I Use For Fish Tacos?
The best thing about fish tacos is that you can use any fish you like! Fish tacos can reflect your tastes and your personalities!
I have seen tacos made with cod, ( baked cod would be delicious!), tilapia (grill your tilapia for the exceptional flavor), salmon, shrimp, tuna, and halibut. And now we have catfish tacos!
How Do I Make Fish Tacos Recipe With Catfish?
For this recipe, I used leftovers from this catfish sandwich. The fish was adapted from my southern fried catfish recipe. It is easy to make, tastes crispy and delicious!
You could also bake your catfish (breaded or dry-rubbed). To bake your fish, bread, or season your fish and place it in a 350-degree oven. The fish will need to bake for about 15 minutes or until the fish flakes easily.
You can also grill your fish by seasoning your fish and placing it directly on your greased grill grates. The fish will only take about 5-6 minutes per side. The fish is tender so be sure to keep an eye on it!
What Goes With Fish Tacos?
I chose to pair the crisp fried fish tacos with a creamy, jalapeno slaw. To make the slaw:
- In a bowl, whisk together mayo, lime juice, salt, and cumin.
- Add chopped fresh jalapenos and slaw mix or shredded cabbage, tossing to coat.
- Divide the slaw between each taco.
Other options for taco toppings are:
Salsa
Fresh fruit such as chopped mangos, pineapples, and citrus slices.
Guacamole
Diced Avocados
Beans (or bean salad)
Chopped tomatoes and cucumbers
Recipe Tips
I was able to get about two tacos per whole catfish fillet. You can adjust this as necessary. Cut each piece of fish into 4 quarters.
I used flour tortillas, that is my preference. I think the flour tortillas taste better with the crispy catfish than a corn tortilla.
The slaw does have a good deal of mayo; You can reduce the amount or you can even use plain Greek yogurt for all or some of the mayo. Sour cream would work as well.
How Long Will Fish Tacos Last?
The fish itself will be fine if kept in the fridge for up to three days. If you have leftovers, store the fish separately from the slaw to prevent the fish from getting too soggy.
The slaw will be good for up to one day.
