This chicken gyro sandwich beats any deli sandwich out there! Tender, seasoned chicken is wrapped in warm pita bread and topped with veggies and a homemade tzatziki sauce! You are going to want to sink your teeth into one of these!
Do you know how people from Philly sort of have to love a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich? I think the same holds true for us Greek people. It’s an unspoken requirement that we have to love a gyro sandwich. I am always up for a good gyro sandwich!
If I were being authentic, then this sandwich would be made with a pork leg that is grilled and rotated on a rotisserie. You can also find gyros made with lamb, (commonly seen in Greek restaurants and festivals) beef (or a combination of lamb and beef) and of course, with chicken.
What Is A Chicken Gyro Made Of?
To keep it simple, a Greek chicken gyro is made with lean chicken breasts, pita bread rounds, cucumbers, tomatoes, and quick tzatziki sauce that is a staple in Greek food! The word “gyro” means to turn. This describes the meat that is usually cooked on verticle rotisserie.

How To Make Chicken Gyro
I used chicken breast for this chicken gyro recipe that I seasoned with oregano, basil, garlic salt, onion powder, and olive oil. I grilled the chicken breasts until done. I used a grill pan set over medium-high heat for cooking the chicken, but of course, an outdoor grill is ideal.
You could also pan fry the chicken or roast the chicken breast in the oven. The method is really up to you.
Once the chicken has finished cooking, keep it warm but set it aside.
To prepare the tzatziki sauce, combine Greek yogurt, lemon juice, grated cucumber and salt, and garlic in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate the sauce until ready.
To assemble the sandwiches, wrap the pita bread in a damp towel and microwave them for about 20 seconds. You basically want them pliable enough to hold your sandwich filling.
Cut your chicken into strips and add the chicken to your pita bread. Top each sandwich with cucumbers and tomatoes, then drizzle with tzatziki sauce!
Feel free to add kalamata olives, feta cheese, or diced red onion to your gyro sandwiches and serve them up in parchment paper if you want to feel “authentic”. I sometimes like to toss shredded romaine lettuce with red wine vinegar and salt and pepper and place that on my sandwich as well.
You could easily use chicken thighs or even ground chicken in place of the chicken breasts. All in all, this chicken gyro with tzatziki can be ready and in your hot little hands in under 30 minutes!
While pita bread is most commonly used in this sandwich, you could substitute naan bread. You want something that can be “folded” or is pliable. It should be soft, yet durable too. In a pinch, tortillas could be used in place of pita bread.
Is Chicken Gyro Gluten Free?
This chicken alone is gluten free as are the toppings and the sauce. Gluten-free bread must be used in place of the pita.
What About Whole30?
Toss the chicken with a salad and the vegetables and top it with a Greek dressing to turn this into a Paleo or Whole30 approved meal.
What To Serve with Chicken Gyro?
This sandwich really doesn’t need much on the side. However, you could serve this Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad, This Greek Style Red Potato Salad, a Spring Salad Recipe, Greek Pasta Salad, or Greek Roasted Potatoes.
Can You Freeze Chicken Gyro?
As a sandwich, no. But you could easily prepare the chicken as directed and then slice it and place the chicken in zip-top freezer safe bags to be used for a later date. I would even make a double batch of chicken to be stored for a later date!
How To Reheat A Chicken Gyro?
The best way to reheat this sandwich is by covering the chicken and the pita with a damp paper towel and microwaving them for 30-45 seconds. Alternatively, cover the sandwich with foil and gently heat in a preheated oven for 5-10 minutes. Do not reheat the sandwich with the vegetables or the sauce.
This chicken gyro is one of my favorite sandwiches of all times (and I’m not just saying that because I am Greek)! It is easy, the only cooking that needs to be done is the grilling and it tastes so good! It makes a great lunch, a quick meal, packed to go or made into a salad with or without the bread. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
