These little ricotta donuts have loads of apple spice flavor. Grab them while they are hot and dip them in caramel sauce!
Apple spice donuts might be my favorite thing about fall. They are bite-sized spiced nuggets of fried dough that cannot be beat! My family LOVES donuts. I mean, someone asks if we can have donuts for breakfast ever single weekend.
Our favorite donut shop is not a chain. It is a mom and pop shop that has the BEST donuts ever. They literally melt in your mouth and the flavor selection is quite vast. You can choose from Oreo, Red Velvet, Coconut, Butterfinger, Blueberry, Lemon, Crumb Cake Toffee, Strawberry, Chocolate and whatever else your heart desires. But, there is no apple.
I cannot let this season go by without eating apples in both my savory and sweet dishes. I have tried an easy apple cobbler for dessert and a sheet pan sausage dinner filled with apples for my main course. Now it’s time to add apples to my breakfast! These apple spice donuts are probably better suited for dessert, but since they have the word “donut” in the name; I’m going to say they are a perfectly acceptable way to start the day.
This recipe is adapted from my original ricotta donut recipe but with the added helping of some apple flavor. The apple comes from grated apple, apple spice and apple juice; it’s a trifecta of apple. I don’t usually make donuts. I rarely want to deal with the frying I guess.
But after trying these Lemon Sugar Biscuit Donuts, I’ve come to love fried donuts (although baked donuts are just as good). These donuts are small so they fry up quickly, be sure to keep an eye on them while they are bobbing around in the oil! When they have cooled slightly, hit them with cinnamon sugar. Then pop em in your mouth or serve them with caramel sauce!
Apple Spice Ricotta Donuts
These little ricotta donuts have loads of apple spice flavor. Grab them while they are hot and dip them in caramel sauce!
Ingredients
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cups ricotta cheese
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 4 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ cup grated apple
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 1 tablespoon apple juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Instructions
Combine the eggs, sugar, ricotta cheese, flour, baking powder and vanilla in large bowl. Stir in grated apple, apple spice and juice. Whisk ingredients until smooth.
Add vegetable oil to a stock pot until it is an inch deep. Heat oil over medium high heat until the temperature reaches 325 degrees.
Using a small cookie scoop, carefully gather dough and drop 3 or 4 scoops into the hot oil. Allow donuts to brown for 1-2 minutes, flip donuts over and allow the second side to brown, which should take a minute. Remove donuts to a baking sheet lined with a paper towel. Repeat with remaining batter.
Combine the 2 tablespoons of sugar and the cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
Allow donuts to cool completely before rolling in sugar mixture.

I don’t like to deep fry but I wanted to make donuts. I came across this recipe and since its fall (even in Hawaii), why not. I was only making half the recipe and I did not want to open a regular size apple juice or waste half an apple so I used apple sauce instead. I followed the rest of the ingredients and it was a delicious. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I hate deep frying, but sometimes it’s worth it! Sometimes I buy little apple juice bottles (single serve) or use juice from a juice box, but I love the applesauce substitution! So happy you enjoyed them!
