Both my husband and I are HUGE fans of apple pie. I have three kids, however, that do not like baked fruit in any form. They are so weird.
Since half the family doesn’t like fruit pies, I don’t bother making whole pies. While I could eat half a pie, I SHOULDN’T eat half a pie.
I should eat baked apples though.
What Do I Need To Make Baked Apples?
- Apples
- Refrigerated pie crusts
- Butter
- Brown sugar
- Apple pie spice
- Egg
- Baking sheet
- Silicone mat or parchment paper
How Do You Make Baked Apples?
STEP ONE – Halve two apples, core the apple center and remove any seeds. Line a baking sheet with silicone mats or parchment paper and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
STEP TWO – In a small bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, and apple pie spice until smooth.
STEP THREE – Working with one pie crust at a time, spread out the crust on a work surface. Cut each dough circle into 1 inch strips.
STEP FOUR – Take two strips and criss-cross them. Place one apple half in the center where the two strips meet. Place a generous spoonful of filling in the apple cavity. Bring the two strips of dough over the apple and gently press together.
STEP FIVE – Take one dough strip and cut it in half. Arrange the halves over the apple parallel to one another (so they look like railroads). Press the ends into the existing dough strips.
STEP SIX – Take another strip of dough and cut it in half and place them over the existing strips to make them look like a lattice, pinch all the dough pieces together where they meet. Place the covered apple on the prepared baking tray. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough pieces.
STEP SEVEN– Combine egg and water, whisk together. Brush the egg wash over the dough. Bake the apples for about 20 minutes. The dough should be golden brown and crispy and the apples should be tender.
What Types Of Apples Should I Use For This Recipe?
You want an apple that can stand up to baking without becoming too mealy, you also don’t want an apple that is too sweet.
I find that Honeycrisps or Granny Smith Apple works really well in pies and as baked apples.
Can I Freeze Baked Apples?
Yes, you can freeze them apples if you wish to enjoy then at a later time. Allow the baked apple to cool completely. Place them in an airtight container or cover them completely with plastic wrap and aluminum foil and freeze the apples for 1 month.
Thaw apples in the fridge and then bake in the oven (covered) for about 15 minutes at a 450-degree oven or until heated through.
Store baked apples covered in the fridge to extend their shelf life.
Baked Apple Recipe Tips
- The apples I used (which were Honeycrisp apples) were on the very large side. If you use smaller apples, the amount of dough used and the cooking time may need to be reduced.
- You can add a little vanilla extract to the filling if desired. You can also add pecans to the mixture.
- It is not necessary to peel the apples for this recipe, although you can do so if that is your preference.
- You can also sprinkle the tops of the dough with a little sugar just before baking.
- Serve your baked apples with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce!
