Spicy Italian subs are the perfect game day sandwich! Deli meat and provolone cheese are piled high in these thick and flavorful spicy Italian sub sandwiches!
What Is An Italian Sub Sandwich?
A spicy Italian sandwich features a blend of meats and cheeses on a sub bun with a few veggie fixings and a vinegar-based dressing. It is a quick, easy sandwich that is also very filling. It’s perfect for cold meals in summer or for enjoying throughout the year. Cut them in half and serve at your next party or get together and they’re sure to dissappear.
Ingredients
- Submarine sandwich rolls- You can’t have a good spicy Italian sub without a good sub roll.
- Mayonnaise
- Provolone cheese
- Sliced ham
- Sliced of turkey
- Sliced hard salami
- Sliced sandwich pepperoni
- Sambal Oelek Chili Paste (optional)
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
- Tomato
- Olive oil
- White vinegar
- Dried Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper
For the exact amounts needed, please see the recipe card below.
How To Make Italian Subs
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Cut sandwich rolls along one seam being careful to not cut all the way through.
- Spread mayo on each side of the sub roll. I spread a scant amount of mayo on the inside of only half of my sub roll, I didn’t want the mayo to be too pronounced (please adjust this to your tastes).
- Top each roll with cheese, ham, turkey, salami, and pepperoni.
- Spread a tablespoon of chili paste on each sub.
- Heat in the oven for 5 minutes or until cheese melts.
- Meanwhile, place lettuce in a bowl. In another bowl whisk together the oil, vinegar, and seasoning. Pour the dressing over the lettuce.
- When sandwiches have been heated, divide the lettuce among each of the subs and then top with some tomato slices.
Substitutions
- Cheeses. You can easily swap out the cheese for your favorite; mozzarella would make a great choice.
- Meats. As far as deli meats go, Mortadella, Capicola, or Soppressata make great substitutions for ham, pepperoni, and salami.
- Spices. If you do not want to use the chili sauce, chili flakes tossed with the salad would be a great way to change up the recipe.

What a wonderfully written post, Tanya! These sandwiches sound wonderful, and I LOVE the photos! I have to say that I probably would have gotten my sandwich to go given the smoke smell, but then I wouldn’t get the full experience!

Like others before me, I love a good sub and I haven’t enjoyed one in quite some time. We never had a sub spot for late night but it’s not like we went to bed hungry. Still, you’ve given me the inspiration to get some lunchmeat and make a sub — or three. Thanks, Tanya!
