One thing I love more than donuts is homemade donuts!
These homemade donut holes are made with fresh strawberries which makes them extra sweet and delicious!
Making your own donuts is easier than you may think, especially when following along with this strawberry donut holes recipe. It’s as simple as mixing a batter and dropping it into the oil to fry. Fast, simple, and always delicious. Try it soon and let me know how it goes! These fried donut holes are always a huge hit around here and I’m sure that they will be a huge hit in your home too!
Homemade Strawberry Donuts
This strawberry donut recipe is perfect as-is, especially in springtime when the strawberries are fresh off of the vines. Every donut hole is moist and subtly sweet with the tangy fresh strawberries packed into every bite. They smell so drool-worthy and the added dusting of powdered sugar at the end makes them look show-stopping good!
Ingredients
- Oil
- Milk
- Egg
- Vanilla extract
- Melted butter
- All-purpose flour
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground cinnamon
- Granulated sugar
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Diced strawberries
- Powdered sugar
For the exact amounts needed, please see the recipe card below.
How to Make Strawberry Donut Holes
- Heat your oil inside of a large dutch oven or tall-sided pot until it reaches 350 degrees F. This is about medium-high heat.
- While the oil is heating, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a bowl.
- In a separate bowl, combine the milk, egg, and vanilla.
- Add your wet ingredients to the dry ones and follow them up by stirring in the melted butter. Stir until incorporated.
- Gently fold in the chopped strawberries.
- Once the oil has heated, drop the dough in tablespoon-sized cookie scoops into the oil.
- Fry the donuts for about 1-2 minutes per side or until the donuts are golden in color. Do not overcrowd your pot!
- Use tongs or a strainer to remove the donuts and allow them to drain on a paper towel-lined baking sheet.
- Repeat until all of the dough has been cooked and used.
- Once the donuts have cooled, roll them in a dusting of powdered sugar and serve.
- Enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- You can use any type of milk in this recipe. Whole milk and 2% both work out the same. Even non-dairy milk can be used. Plant-based margarine has not been tested but should work just as fine as regular butter. If you try it, let me know in the comments how it turns out.
- If you do not have strawberries on hand you can swap them out for fresh blueberries for a different flavor experience that you’re sure to love! Frozen fruits and berries will not work as well as fresh because of the added water content and may result in unnecessary splashing from the hot oil which could cause burns. For your safety, please stick with fresh fruit.
- If desired you can coat your donut holes in a simple powdered sugar glaze instead of a dusting of powdered sugar. This can be made as simple as mixing powdered sugar with milk or water until smooth. Start with a cup of powdered sugar in a bowl and whisk in milk or water 1-2 teaspoons at a time. If needed you can add in more powdered sugar to get it thicker or add more liquid to thin it down until it’s reached your desired consistency.
FAQs
How long are homemade donut holes good for?
these fried strawberry donuts are best eaten the same day that they are made. Especially when served warm. If you need to store them until the next day, place them into an airtight container with a paper towel and store them in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat when ready to eat for the best-tasting results as they are greatest when served warm.
What are donut holes?
Donuts are often made with a yeast dough that is laminated a few times and puffed up before being cut into circles or bars. The centers are referred to as donut holes as they are a round mini version of the larger portion and by frying them up, you reduce waste and make a cute snack. Our donut holes are similar in appearance but are more like a hush puppies than an actual donut because we don’t go through the effort of making a yeast dough or having long wait times.

Okay first– I am in LOVE with these donuts. I am such a strawberry addict right now. I can’t get enough. Second– I am a high maintenance giftee too! I don’t think I realized it until I read your little self-reflective statement there. It actually only applies to my guy’s gifts though. Mom, sisters, kids– they are all off the hook.
Maybe I could teach him to make donuts.
